'The Sohar: Voyage Symposium “Interpretation and Outlook”' will be organized by the Sultanate of Oman Ministry of Heritage and Culture in Muscat on the 5th – 6th December 2016. This symposium will mark the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the arrival of the "Sohar" ship to the port of Canton in China. The event will host speakers and lecturers in relevant fields from Australia, China, Ireland and Oman. It will also include a photographic gallery commemorating the historical journey.

The main objective of the symposium is to commemorate the “Sohar” ship, which left Oman on the 21st November 1980, and in doing so highlight and promote Omani-Chinese relations. It seeks to elucidate the contribution of sailors and Omani merchants and consolidate relations between Oman and China in the wider context of the historical maritime Silk Roads. The symposium will examine both the building of the “Sohar” ship at its earliest stages and its journey to China, and will also illustrate the importance of Chinese merchants and their marine expeditions to Oman. Besides its historical focus the symposium will identify the prospects of future cultural and economic relations between Oman and China.
