Villa Ocampo

UNESCO Villa Ocampo Observatory

The UNESCO Villa Ocampo Observatory, faithful to the intellectual and ethical legacy of Victoria Ocampo, and in line with UNESCO's mandate, has the mission to reaffirm the relationship between culture and sustainable development as a contribution to the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The UNESCO Observatory Villa Ocampo is hosted by UNESCO Montevideo.

As a site of memory, thought and creativity, the objective of the UNESCO Villa Ocampo Observatory is to position Culture, Education and Science as cross-cutting components that impact on the quality of life and promote human development. These must be understood as integral instruments to eradicate poverty, favour the improvement of socioeconomic conditions, combat all forms of discrimination, promote inclusion and the growth of cities in harmony with the environment.

"I see Villa Ocampo as a place of our own and also of those who come with a valuable contribution; I see it as a place where men who are passionate about the same studies will be able to discuss their experiences, exchange data, compare, receive and give."

The Garden

Villa Ocampo's garden was designed, like the house, in the last decade of the 19th century. The design was carried out by the engineer Manuel Ocampo, Victoria's father. Originally, the garden of this summer house was even more extensive than the present one; today the architectural complex has an area of 11,000 square metres.
