About UNESCO Office in Quito

The UNESCO Office in Quito was established on 6 June 1983. At that time, it played the role of Regional Communication Office for Latin America. Regardless, there was a UNESCO representative office for Ecuador and Colombia.

In 1992, these two offices were merged into a single office under the name of Regional Communication Office for Latin America and Representation for Ecuador and Colombia. Between 1998 and 2001, the office was again merely a UNESCO Representative Office for Ecuador and Colombia. The Regional Communication Office for Latin America, instead, was relocated to Panama.

In 2001, the Regional Communication Office for Latin America reopened in Quito.

Increasing its areas of work, the office changed its name in 2002 to Regional Communication and Information Office for Latin America and the Caribbean. At the same time, the office took the role of Cluster Office to represent the Andean countries of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.

Today, with UNESCO's new decentralization structure, the office has a Communication and Information Department as well as Education, Culture and Science Sectors, all covering the Andean region (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela) . This dimension of the Office offers technical ans consulting help and assistance to formulate and implement activities and projects in this region.

The office supports and implements projects that contribute to:

  • overcoming inequality and poverty through the promotion of quality education at all levels
  • generate policies and actions for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development
  • promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and the protection of tangible and intangible World Heritage
  • support the management of social policies of local governments against poverty
  • promote autonomy and citizen participation through freedom of expression and
  • to train in the use of information and communication technologies.

Through its strategies and activities, UNESCO-Quito acts in favor of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
