Describe the main features of the policy/measure:

The Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) supports the creation of original civic journalism that meets the diverse needs of underserved communities in Canada through an investment of $ 50 million over 5 years.

To preserve the independence of the press, the government mandated administration of the initiative to seven independent non-governmental organizations, representing different segments of the media industry.

These governing bodies allocate funds to hire journalists or pay freelance journalists to support the production of civic journalistic content in underserved communities. Canadian media organizations eligible for funding are news agencies, private media organizations, and not-for-profit media organizations in the print media, community radio, community television, and online news services sectors.

The Canadian public will thus be better informed since all the content produced is made available free of charge through a Creative Commons license.
