UNESCO SHINES A LIGHT ON AFRICA’S CREATIVE FUTURE

UNESCO continues to shine a light on a Creative Africa by participating in the second edition of FAME Week Africa taking place in Cape Town, South Africa on 24-26 August 2022.

UNESCO will promote its new report The African film Industry: trends, challenges and opportunities for growth, and will organize an expert panel to highlight best practices in the audio-visual sector as part of the EU/UNESCO Programme ‘: “Supporting new regulatory frameworks to strengthen the cultural and creative industries and promote South-South cooperation”.  

The African Film industry report is a landmark publication that brings together significant data on the film and audiovisual industries from 54 countries in Africa for the first time, noting that with smart investment and policy reforms, the African film industry which currently employs an estimated 5 million people and accounts for $5 billion in GDP could create over 20 million jobs and contribute $20 billion to the continent’s combined GDP.

The panel discussion will focus on the need to develop strong regulatory frameworks to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions and the rights of artists in order to empower Africa’s creative and cultural industries to reach their full potential as drivers of sustainable social and economic development.

The expert panel includes speakers from the EU/UNESCO Programme from Ethiopia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The event will take place on MIP Africa area (theatre space) on 24 August at 10.30am.
